How It Works

A potentiometer has three terminals: two connected to the ends of the resistive element and one connected to the movable center wiper. Rotating the shaft changes the wiper position and therefore changes the resistance between the wiper and either outer terminal.

When all three terminals are used, the component can operate as an adjustable voltage divider. When the wiper is connected to one outer terminal, it can also be used as a variable resistor.

For microcontroller applications, the center wiper can be connected to an analog input while the two outer terminals are connected between the appropriate supply voltage and ground. Rotating the shaft then produces a variable voltage that can be read by the microcontroller's ADC.
