Overview
The ESP32-CAM WiFi Bluetooth Camera Module Development Board is a compact and versatile development platform for building wireless camera and IoT applications. With integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, an OV2640-compatible camera interface, built-in flash LED, and microSD card support, the ESP32-CAM provides a practical solution for image capture and wireless video streaming.
The board can operate as a standalone WiFi access point, allowing a smartphone or computer to connect directly to the ESP32-CAM and access its camera interface. The supplied firmware can be tested by connecting the camera ribbon cable, inserting a microSD card, powering the board through a compatible programmer, and accessing the device through a browser.
For custom development, the ESP32-CAM can be programmed using the Arduino IDE and the ESP32 Arduino core. The AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM board option can be selected when working with the CameraWebServer example, allowing users to build applications with live video streaming and adjustable camera settings.

How It Works
The ESP32-CAM uses the ESP32 platform to control the connected camera and provide wireless communication. The camera captures images that can be processed or transmitted through the ESP32's WiFi connection.
For a basic test, connect the camera ribbon cable carefully to the FPC connector and insert a compatible microSD card if required. Power the board using a suitable programmer and USB power source. With the supplied firmware, the board can create a WiFi network such as ESP32-CAM or HW297C.
Connect a smartphone or computer to the ESP32-CAM WiFi network and open 192.168.4.1 in a web browser. The camera interface can then be used to start the video stream.
For custom programming, install the ESP32 board package in Arduino IDE and select AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM. The CameraWebServer example can be configured with the appropriate camera model and WiFi credentials before uploading the firmware.
Note: Partition Your 16GB or 32 GB card to 4GB and allocate rest of the storage to Unallocated space to make your large memory card work as a 4GB memory card to work on the ESP32-CAM
Important Notes
- The camera ribbon cable must be connected correctly before using the camera.
- The camera connector and ribbon cable are delicate; avoid forceful insertion.
- Use a good-quality USB cable and a stable power source, especially when the camera and flash LED are active.
- The supplied product may already have default firmware installed; do not upload new firmware unless custom programming is required.
- A compatible microSD card may be required for applications using external storage.
- The actual camera module supplied may vary depending on the production version.
- Product images are for illustrative purposes and may differ from the actual product.
- Camera performance, supported resolutions, and features depend on the installed camera module and firmware.
- Ensure the correct board model is selected when programming through Arduino IDE.
- Do not exceed the recommended 5V power input.
- Power consumption can increase significantly when the camera flash LED is enabled.
