MAX485 RS-485 Module TTL to RS-485 Module For Arduino

Overview
The MAX485 RS-485 Module TTL to RS-485 Converter provides a practical interface between microcontrollers using TTL-level UART signals and robust RS-485 differential communication networks. By converting single-ended serial data into differential A/B signaling, it is suitable for communication over longer cable runs and electrically noisy environments.
Based on a MAX485 transceiver, the module supports half-duplex communication and provides separate Driver Enable (DE) and Receiver Enable (RE) control lines. These pins allow a microcontroller to switch between transmitting and receiving data as required by the RS-485 bus.
The board includes a convenient 5.08mm 2-pin screw terminal for connecting the RS-485 A and B lines. It can be used in multi-node networks and is suitable for applications such as Modbus communication, industrial automation, remote sensors, robotics, building automation, and distributed monitoring systems.
For extended RS-485 networks, proper bus wiring and termination are important. A 120Ω termination resistor is commonly placed across the A and B lines at the physical ends of the bus to reduce signal reflections. The module is non-isolated, so additional protection or isolation may be necessary in environments exposed to significant electrical transients or ground potential differences.

Product Technical Information
Technical Details
The MAX485 RS-485 Module TTL to RS-485 Breakout Board is designed to provide a simple interface between a microcontroller's TTL serial communication and an RS-485 differential bus.
RS-485 is widely used for applications where serial communication needs to travel farther or operate in environments with more electrical noise than conventional single-ended UART connections can reliably tolerate. This module makes it possible to connect Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and other compatible controllers to RS-485 devices and networks.
Key Features
- MAX485-based RS-485 transceiver
- TTL-to-RS-485 communication interface
- Half-duplex operation
- 5V DC operating voltage
- Up to 10 Mbps maximum data rate under suitable conditions
- Supports multi-node RS-485 bus configurations
- 5.08mm 2-pin screw terminal for A/B bus connections
- Separate DE and RE control pins
- Compact breakout-board design
- Suitable for Modbus and other RS-485 protocols
Typical Applications
This module can be used for:
- Arduino RS-485 communication
- ESP32 and STM32 communication projects
- Modbus RTU networks
- Industrial automation
- Remote sensor networks
- Robotics communication
- Building automation
- Smart agriculture systems
- Access control systems
- Distributed monitoring systems
- Long-distance serial communication
DE and RE Control
The module operates in half-duplex mode, so the microcontroller needs to manage the transmitter and receiver enable signals appropriately.
- DE: Enables the RS-485 driver when activated.
- RE: Controls the RS-485 receiver and is typically enabled when receiving data.
The exact firmware logic depends on the microcontroller and communication library being used.
RS-485 Wiring
The RS-485 network uses differential A and B signal lines. For longer bus installations, proper cable routing and termination are important. A 120Ω termination resistor is commonly used across A and B at the physical ends of an RS-485 bus when required by the network topology.
Important Notes
- Use a regulated 5V DC supply for the module.
- This is a non-isolated RS-485 interface.
- The stated maximum communication distance and data rate are dependent on cable type, baud rate, topology, termination, interference, and other installation conditions.
- Do not assume that the maximum stated distance and maximum stated data rate can be achieved simultaneously.
- Use suitable electrical protection or isolation when connecting the module to harsh industrial environments or systems with significant ground-potential differences.
- Allow approximately 5% dimensional variation due to manufacturing and measurement tolerances.
Package Includes:
- 1 × MAX485 RS-485 Module TTL to RS-485 Converter Breakout Board
