Overview

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 delivers a significant imaging upgrade for Raspberry Pi projects with its Sony IMX708 back-illuminated CMOS sensor. It captures detailed still images at up to 4608 × 2592 pixels and supports a range of video modes for applications requiring smooth and responsive video capture.

One of its key improvements is Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), which allows the camera to adjust focus quickly and accurately. This makes it particularly useful for robotics, computer vision, monitoring systems, and projects where the distance to the subject can change.

The camera also supports HDR capture up to 3MP output, helping preserve image detail in scenes containing both bright and dark areas. Dynamic Defect Pixel Correction (DPC) and the back-illuminated sensor design further contribute to clean image output.

The Camera Module 3 maintains the familiar mounting dimensions of the previous camera generation while adding improved optics and autofocus functionality. It is supported through the libcamera software stack, making it suitable for both beginner Raspberry Pi projects and more advanced imaging applications.
