Overview

The ADS1115 4-Channel 16-Bit Precision ADC Module is designed for projects where the analog resolution of a typical microcontroller ADC is not sufficient. It provides a 16-bit delta-sigma conversion architecture with an integrated programmable gain amplifier (PGA), allowing the input range to be selected according to the signal being measured.

The module provides four single-ended analog inputs or two differential input pairs through an internal multiplexer. This makes it useful for reading multiple sensors or measuring differential signals such as those produced by bridge-based sensing circuits. The programmable data rate can be configured from 8SPS up to 860SPS depending on the application.

Communication is handled through the two-wire I2C bus, with four selectable addresses from 0x48 to 0x4B. This allows multiple ADS1115 devices to share the same I2C bus when their addresses are configured appropriately.

Product Technical Information

Technical Details

The ADS1115 ADC Module provides a convenient way to add a precision analog measurement interface to microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and other systems with an I2C interface.

Unlike a basic low-resolution ADC, the ADS1115 uses a 16-bit delta-sigma converter and an integrated PGA. The PGA provides selectable input ranges from ±256mV to ±6.144V, allowing the ADC configuration to be matched more closely to the expected signal level.

The module's multiplexer allows the four analog channels to be used as four independent single-ended inputs or configured as two differential measurement pairs. This flexibility makes the board useful for sensor interfaces, voltage monitoring, bridge sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.

The ADS1115 also includes an internal reference, oscillator, and programmable digital comparator. Its I2C interface provides four selectable addresses, allowing multiple ADS1115 devices to coexist on a shared bus.

Features

  • 16-bit delta-sigma ADC
  • Four single-ended analog input channels
  • Two differential input configurations
  • I2C two-wire communication
  • Four selectable I2C addresses: 0x48–0x4B
  • Programmable gain amplifier (PGA)
  • PGA input ranges from ±256mV to ±6.144V
  • Programmable data rate from 8SPS to 860SPS
  • Internal low-drift voltage reference
  • Internal oscillator
  • Programmable digital comparator
  • Wide 2.0–5.5V supply range
  • Low current consumption
  • Compact breakout-board design
  • Suitable for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32 and other I2C systems

Applications

  • Precision analog data acquisition
  • Sensor signal measurement
  • Battery voltage monitoring
  • Current and voltage measurement
  • Strain gauge and bridge-sensor interfaces
  • Temperature sensor measurement
  • Industrial instrumentation
  • Environmental sensor systems
  • Gas and analog sensor monitoring
  • Laboratory and educational projects
  • Arduino and ESP32 analog expansion
  • Multi-channel analog telemetry

How to Use

  1. Connect VDD to a suitable supply between 2.0V and 5.5V.
  2. Connect GND to the controller ground.
  3. Connect SDA and SCL to the corresponding I2C pins of the microcontroller.
  4. Connect the analog sensor output to A0–A3 as required.
  5. Select the appropriate single-ended or differential measurement mode in software.
  6. Configure the PGA gain according to the expected input voltage range.
  7. Select an appropriate data rate between 8SPS and 860SPS.
  8. Configure the I2C address if multiple ADS1115 modules are being used.
  9. Read the converted ADC values through the I2C interface and convert them into the required voltage or sensor measurement.

Important Notes

  • The 16-bit resolution does not automatically guarantee 16-bit accuracy. Actual measurement performance depends on reference quality, noise, PCB layout, sensor characteristics, gain setting, and system calibration.
  • Do not apply an input beyond the permissible ADS1115 input/common-mode limits. The PGA input range is not the same as permission to exceed the module's supply rails.
  • The ADS1115's PGA supports ranges down to ±256mV, but the input signal and common-mode voltage must still remain within the device's specified operating conditions.
  • The module uses an I2C interface, so SDA and SCL require appropriate pull-up arrangements.
  • I2C address selection depends on the specific breakout-board wiring and ADDR connection.
  • Multiple modules can share an I2C bus when their addresses are configured differently.
  • For low-level signals, keep analog wiring short and away from noisy switching circuits, motors, and high-current wiring.
  • Proper grounding and signal conditioning are important when measuring very small analog signals.
  • The supplied module's physical dimensions and component layout may vary slightly between production batches.
  • Product images are for illustration only and may differ from the actual module.
  • Please allow approximately 5% measurement deviation for manually measured dimensions.
