Product Technical Information
Technical Details
The BN-220 GPS Module is a small GNSS receiver designed to add satellite-based positioning to FPV drones, RC aircraft, robotics systems, and embedded electronics projects. Built around the u-blox M8030-KT chipset, it supports multiple satellite constellations and provides positioning data through a serial interface. Its integrated ceramic antenna helps simplify installation where space and weight are important considerations.
Features
Multi-Constellation Navigation: Supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, and SBAS.
Compact and Lightweight: Measures approximately 22 × 20 × 6mm and weighs around 5.3g.
Integrated Antenna: Includes a ceramic antenna for satellite signal reception.
UART Serial Communication: Sends GPS information to compatible flight controllers, microcontrollers, and embedded systems.
NMEA and UBX Protocols: Supports common GNSS data protocols, with NMEA-0183 typically selected by default.
Low Power Consumption: Typical current consumption is approximately 50mA at 5V during signal capture.
LED Status Indicators: The blue TX LED indicates serial data output, while the red PPS LED indicates positioning status according to the module's documented behavior.
Configurable Data Rate: Supports configurable serial baud rates and GNSS update frequencies.
Applications
FPV racing and freestyle drones
Long-range drone navigation
RC aircraft and UAV projects
Raspberry Pi and microcontroller GPS projects
Robotics and autonomous vehicle experiments
GPS tracking and location logging
Embedded navigation and timing applications
How to Use
Check the pinout: Identify the module's GND, TX, RX, and VCC pins before connecting it.
Connect the power supply: Supply a compatible voltage within the specified 3.0–5.5V range.
Connect serial communication: Connect the GPS TX pin to the controller's RX pin. Connect the GPS RX pin to the controller's TX pin if configuration commands are required, and connect the grounds together.
Configure the receiver: Set the correct UART port, baud rate, and GPS protocol in the flight controller or software. The typical default baud rate is 9600 bps.
Position the antenna: Mount the module with its antenna facing upward and with a clear view of the sky.
Check the GPS fix: Test outdoors and confirm that valid satellite and position data are received before using the system.
Important Notes
The BN-220 is a GPS/GNSS receiver, not a compass module. Do not assume it provides magnetic heading.
Verify the module's pin arrangement before applying power; incorrect wiring may damage the receiver or connected controller.
The default serial interface is typically TTL-level UART. Do not connect it directly to an RS-232 voltage-level interface without suitable conversion.
The stated positioning accuracy is based on specified test conditions and is not guaranteed in obstructed or high-interference environments.
Satellite acquisition may take longer indoors, under trees, or near buildings.
The module's update rate and protocol can depend on its firmware configuration.
Confirm whether connecting wires are included with the specific package before ordering.
