Overview

The L298N Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver Module is a popular interface between microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, and other control boards and higher-current inductive loads. Its two independent H-bridge channels allow bidirectional control of two brushed DC motors, while the two bridges can also be used to control a compatible 2-phase bipolar stepper motor.

The module provides EnA and EnB enable inputs, which can be connected to PWM-capable microcontroller pins for speed control. The IN1–IN4 inputs determine motor direction and switching states, while OUT1–OUT4 connect to the motor windings. Current-sense connections are also provided by the L298 architecture for applications requiring external current monitoring.

An onboard heatsink helps dissipate the significant heat generated by the L298N's bipolar output stages. The IC includes over-temperature protection, but the module's practical continuous current capability depends heavily on motor current, supply voltage, duty cycle, cooling, and operating conditions.

A key characteristic of the L298N is its relatively high output-stage voltage drop. At higher motor currents, several volts can be lost across the driver, resulting in additional heat and a lower voltage at the motor terminals. Therefore, the module is best suited to applications where this voltage drop and heat dissipation are acceptable.

Product Technical Information

Technical Details

The L298N H-Bridge Dual Motor Driver Module is designed to provide bidirectional control of motors from a low-power digital controller. The module uses two full H-bridge circuits, allowing independent control of two DC motors or coordinated control of a suitable bipolar stepper motor. The L298 is specifically designed to drive inductive loads including relays, solenoids, DC motors, and stepping motors.

Features

  • L298N dual H-bridge driver IC.
  • Two independent motor-control channels.
  • Suitable for two brushed DC motors.
  • Can drive compatible 2-phase bipolar stepper motors.
  • Up to 2A output per channel under appropriate operating conditions.
  • EnA and EnB enable inputs for PWM speed control.
  • IN1–IN4 directional control inputs.
  • Separate OUT1–OUT4 motor terminals.
  • Current-sense connections for the two bridges.
  • Built-in over-temperature protection.
  • Onboard aluminum heatsink.
  • Power-on LED indicator.
  • Screw terminals for convenient motor and power connections.
  • Compatible with Arduino and other microcontroller platforms.

Applications

  • 2WD and 4WD robot vehicles.
  • Line-following robots.
  • Obstacle-avoidance robots.
  • Differential-drive robotic platforms.
  • DC motor direction and speed control.
  • Bipolar stepper motor control.
  • Arduino robotics projects.
  • Conveyor and actuator prototypes.
  • Small automation systems.
  • Educational electronics projects.
  • DIY CNC and positioning mechanisms.

Pin Details

  • OUT1 / OUT2: Motor A output.
  • OUT3 / OUT4: Motor B output.
  • VMS / 12V: Main motor power input.
  • GND: Common ground.
  • 5V: Logic supply/output depending on the onboard regulator and jumper configuration.
  • EnA: Enable/PWM control for Motor A.
  • IN1 / IN2: Direction/control inputs for Motor A.
  • IN3 / IN4: Direction/control inputs for Motor B.
  • EnB: Enable/PWM control for Motor B.

How to Use

  1. Connect the motor power supply to VMS and GND.
  2. Connect the DC motor to OUT1/OUT2 or OUT3/OUT4.
  3. Connect the Arduino or other controller's ground to the driver's GND.
  4. Connect IN1/IN2 and IN3/IN4 to suitable digital control pins.
  5. Connect EnA and/or EnB to PWM-capable pins if variable speed control is required.
  6. Remove the corresponding enable jumper when controlling EnA or EnB through PWM.
  7. Upload the motor-control program to the microcontroller.
  8. For a bipolar stepper motor, connect each winding to one H-bridge channel and control the two bridges using an appropriate stepper-control sequence.

Important Notes

  • The 2A figure is a maximum output rating, not a guarantee that the module can continuously deliver 2A per channel without substantial heating. Cooling and operating conditions are important.
  • The L298N has a relatively high saturation voltage. At higher current, the voltage lost inside the driver can be several volts, producing considerable heat.
  • Do not select the motor supply voltage solely by adding 2V to the motor's nominal voltage. Instead, consider the motor's actual voltage/current requirements, driver voltage drop, and thermal limits.
  • The onboard regulator and jumper configuration can vary between L298N module versions. Verify the module's regulator arrangement before using its 5V terminal to power external electronics.
  • If using the onboard 5V regulator, excessive input voltage and current can cause regulator heating.
  • Never short OUT1/OUT2 or OUT3/OUT4 while the power supply is active.
  • Do not connect or disconnect motors while the driver is powered.
  • Use an appropriate external power supply capable of handling the motor's startup and stall current.
  • A suitable heatsink and airflow may be necessary for demanding applications.
  • For stepper motors, use a proper stepping sequence and current-controlled operation where appropriate.
  • The module is not an ideal choice for applications requiring very low voltage drop or high efficiency because the L298N's bipolar output stage dissipates significant power.
  • Product dimensions, connector layout, heatsink size, and component arrangement may vary slightly between module batches.
