Overview
The NeoPixel NeoMatrix 8x8 - 64 RGB LED Pixel Matrix WS2812 5050 RGB LED is a compact and versatile solution for creating colorful LED displays and interactive lighting projects. Its 8×8 grid contains 64 individually addressable RGB LEDs, allowing every pixel to produce a different color and brightness level.
Each WS2812 LED integrates its own driver circuitry, so the matrix can be controlled using a single digital data line from a compatible microcontroller. This makes it suitable for Arduino, ESP32, and similar development platforms without requiring separate control lines for each LED.
The matrix can be used to build scrolling text displays, animated icons, clocks, audio visualizers, robotic faces, status indicators, ambient lighting systems, and educational electronics projects. The onboard DIN and DOUT connections also allow multiple matrices to be connected together for larger displays.
For reliable operation, use a stable 5V DC power supply, maintain a common ground between the controller and LED supply, and provide adequate power for the number of LEDs being driven. A large capacitor across the power input can also help reduce voltage fluctuations during current surges.

Product Technical Information
Technical Details
The NeoPixel NeoMatrix 8x8 is an 8×8 RGB LED matrix module with 64 WS2812 smart LEDs arranged in a compact grid. Since each LED is individually addressable, users can control the color and brightness of every pixel to create detailed patterns, animations, symbols, and low-resolution graphics.
The module uses a 5V DC supply and provides DIN and DOUT connections for serial data communication and cascading. Multiple matrices can therefore be combined to create larger LED panels.
The board is particularly useful for Arduino and ESP32 projects, robotic displays, electronic signs, matrix clocks, visual indicators, audio spectrum displays, and educational experiments. Libraries such as Adafruit NeoPixel and FastLED can simplify programming and animation development.
When operating many LEDs simultaneously, adequate power delivery is important. At maximum brightness with white output, the complete 64-pixel matrix can require approximately 3.5A, so an appropriately rated external 5V supply should be used rather than relying on a microcontroller's power rail. Always connect the controller ground and LED power-supply ground together.
Interface Pins:
- 5V: Positive 5V DC power input.
- GND: Ground/power return; connect to the controller's common ground.
- DIN: Serial data input from the microcontroller.
- DOUT: Serial data output for connecting another matrix.
Important Safety & Usage Notes:
- Use a regulated 5V DC power source and avoid exceeding the recommended voltage.
- Do not connect or disconnect signal wiring while the board is powered.
- Avoid looking directly at the LEDs when operating at high brightness.
- For larger installations, use suitable power distribution and wiring.
- A capacitor across the power input can help manage transient current fluctuations.
