Overview

The SIM800L GSM GPRS Module Breakout Board provides an easy way to add GSM and GPRS connectivity to embedded projects. The SIM800L supports 850/900/1800/1900MHz quad-band GSM, allowing it to operate on supported 2G networks for SMS, voice, and packet-data communication.

Communication with a microcontroller is handled through the UART serial interface, while the module can be controlled using standard SIMCom AT commands based on 3GPP TS 27.007 and 27.005. The breakout board also provides level translation for interfacing with supported 3.0V–5.0V logic systems.

With GPRS Multislot Class 12, the module can provide data rates up to approximately 85.6kbps under suitable network conditions. It also supports an RTC and A-GPS/mobile positioning functions as specified for this breakout implementation, making it useful for simple GSM trackers and location-aware projects.

Product Technical Information

Technical Details

The SIM800L GSM GPRS Module Breakout Board is a compact cellular module for adding 2G communication capabilities to microcontroller-based projects. It can be used for sending and receiving SMS messages, making GSM voice calls, and transferring data through GPRS.

The module communicates through UART, making it straightforward to interface with development boards and embedded controllers. AT commands provide control over network registration, SMS, calls, GPRS functions, and other supported modem features.

Its compact breakout-board format and Micro SIM interface make it convenient for IoT prototypes, remote-control systems, GSM alarms, tracking devices, and telemetry projects.

Features

  • SIM800L GSM/GPRS cellular module.
  • Quad-band 850/900/1800/1900MHz operation.

How to Use

  1. Insert a compatible Micro SIM card into the SIM800L breakout board.
  2. Connect an appropriate GSM antenna to the antenna connection.
  3. Provide a stable 3.4V–4.4V supply to the module.
  4. Connect the module's UART TX/RX and GND to the host microcontroller.
  5. Ensure the connected controller uses a compatible logic level.
  6. Power on the module and allow it time to initialize and register with the cellular network.
  7. Use a serial terminal or microcontroller firmware to send AT commands.
  8. Test basic commands such as network registration and signal status before attempting GPRS communication.
  9. Configure SMS, voice, or GPRS functionality according to your project requirements.
  10. For tracking applications, use the supported mobile-positioning/A-GPS functions where applicable.

Important Notes

  • SIM800L is a 2G GSM/GPRS module, not a 3G or 4G LTE module.
  • Local 2G service must be available from your cellular operator for the module to function.
  • The module requires a stable supply in the 3.4V–4.4V range. Do not connect it directly to a 5V power supply unless the specific breakout board includes suitable regulation.
  • Cellular transmission can produce substantially higher instantaneous current demand than sleep mode. Use a properly rated power supply with adequate wiring and local decoupling. Some SIM800L breakout implementations can require around 2A peak during transmission.
  • The stated 3.0V–5.0V logic compatibility applies to the breakout-board implementation and should not be assumed for the bare SIM800L chip.
  • Always connect a suitable antenna before operating the cellular transmitter.
  • GPRS speed depends on network conditions, signal strength, carrier configuration, and network load.
  • A-GPS/mobile positioning should not be confused with a standalone GNSS receiver; positioning performance depends on the supported network and implementation.
  • The module's sleep current is much lower than its active/transmitting current.
  • Use a compatible Micro SIM card with an active service.
  • SIM800L is intended for development and embedded communication applications and should not be treated as a standalone 4G modem.
