Product Technical Information

Technical Details

The Teensy 4.0 USB Development Board is a powerful, compact microcontroller development platform designed for projects that need fast processing, precise timing, and versatile hardware interfaces. Built around the NXP i.MX RT1062 processor, it combines a 600MHz ARM Cortex-M7 core with 1MB RAM and 2MB flash memory, making it suitable for advanced embedded applications that exceed the requirements of many basic microcontroller boards.

The board can be programmed through USB using the Arduino IDE and Teensyduino software. Its wide range of interfaces allows developers to connect sensors, displays, motor controllers, audio devices, communication modules, and other peripherals. Its small form factor makes it convenient for custom electronics, robotics, portable instruments, and space-constrained designs.

Features

  • High-speed processor: The 600MHz ARM Cortex-M7 provides strong computing performance for real-time control and data processing.

  • Large memory capacity: Includes 1MB RAM and 2MB flash memory for program storage and application data.

  • Arduino compatibility: Supports programming through the Arduino IDE with Teensyduino.

  • Extensive I/O: Provides 40 digital input/output pins, including 31 PWM-capable outputs and 14 analog inputs.

  • Multiple communication interfaces: Includes 7 serial ports, 3 I²C interfaces, and 3 SPI interfaces.

  • CAN bus support: Offers three CAN interfaces, including support for CAN FD, for compatible industrial and automotive-style communication projects.

  • Advanced audio capabilities: Supports I²S digital audio and S/PDIF for audio processing and embedded sound applications.

  • USB device and host capabilities: Supports custom USB device projects and USB host functionality through the appropriate connections and software.

  • Hardware acceleration: Includes floating-point processing, DMA channels, cryptographic acceleration, and a hardware random number generator.

  • Compact design: Its small dimensions make it suitable for compact embedded devices and custom PCB integration.

Applications

  • Robotics and autonomous control systems

  • Real-time sensor monitoring and data acquisition

  • USB MIDI controllers and custom USB devices

  • Digital audio processing and sound synthesis

  • Motor control and PWM-based automation

  • CAN bus communication and embedded networking

  • Custom keyboards, control panels, and input devices

  • Scientific instruments and rapid hardware prototyping

How to Use

  1. Connect the board: Connect the Teensy 4.0 to a computer using a compatible Micro-USB data cable.

  2. Install the software: Install the Arduino IDE and the Teensyduino software package.

  3. Select the board: Choose Teensy 4.0 in the development environment and select the appropriate USB or serial settings.

  4. Write your program: Create or open a sketch using compatible Arduino libraries and code.

  5. Upload the sketch: Use the Teensy Loader workflow to program the board over USB.

  6. Connect peripherals: Attach sensors, displays, communication modules, or other components to the appropriate pins.

  7. Test the project: Check serial output and peripheral operation, ensuring all signals use compatible voltage levels.

Important Notes

  • 3.3V logic only: Teensy 4.0 digital I/O pins are not 5V tolerant. Applying 5V directly to a signal pin may damage the board. Use a suitable logic-level shifter when interfacing with 5V devices.

  • Power supply requirements: Follow the official documentation when powering the board through USB or VIN. Avoid connecting competing power sources without proper isolation.

  • Header pins may not be installed: Standard boards may come with solder pads rather than pre-soldered headers. Confirm the exact product version before ordering.

  • USB cable: A compatible data-capable Micro-USB cable may be required and is not necessarily included.

  • USB host functionality: Additional wiring, suitable connectors, and compatible software may be required for USB host applications.

  • Peripheral compatibility: Check pin assignments, voltage levels, current limits, and library support before connecting external hardware.

  • Programming tools: Install the appropriate Teensy software and drivers for your computer's operating system.
