Overview
The Raspberry Pi Camera Module V2 – 8 Megapixel, 1080p is a compact camera expansion board designed for Raspberry Pi-based imaging and computer-vision applications. Its Sony IMX219 CMOS sensor provides high-resolution still-image capture while supporting multiple video modes for different performance requirements.
The camera connects to compatible Raspberry Pi boards through the dedicated 15-pin MIPI CSI camera interface, providing a compact connection suitable for embedded applications where space and direct camera connectivity are important. The lightweight board and supplied ribbon cable make it convenient for robotics, monitoring systems, mobile projects, and time-lapse photography.
With a maximum still-image resolution of 3280 × 2464 pixels, the module can capture detailed images for general photography, documentation, and computer-vision processing. Video modes include 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60fps, and 640 × 480 at up to 90fps, depending on software and camera configuration.
The module uses a fixed-focus lens, so it is designed for applications where a fixed optical setup is acceptable. For close-up imaging, focus characteristics should be considered before installation. Raspberry Pi camera software support depends on the operating system and Raspberry Pi model being used.
