Overview
TEC1-12706 Thermoelectric Peltier Cooling Module
Create compact solid-state cooling systems with the TEC1-12706 Thermoelectric Peltier Module. This semiconductor-based cooling device uses the Peltier effect to transfer heat from one side of the module to the other when DC electrical power is applied.
Unlike conventional refrigeration systems, a Peltier module has no compressor, refrigerant, or mechanically moving parts, making it compact and convenient for experimental and embedded thermal-control applications.
The TEC1-12706 is widely used in DIY mini refrigerators, electronics cooling experiments, temperature-controlled enclosures, beverage coolers, CPU/electronic component cooling experiments, and educational thermoelectric projects.
For effective cooling, the hot side must be connected to an appropriately sized heatsink and fan or other heat-dissipation system. Simply powering the module without adequate hot-side cooling can cause the hot side to become very hot and significantly reduce cooling performance.
Its compact solid-state design makes the TEC1-12706 a popular choice for makers, students, engineers, robotics enthusiasts, and electronics hobbyists exploring thermoelectric cooling.

Technical Details
Solid-State Thermoelectric Cooling
The TEC1-12706 is a thermoelectric cooling module based on the Peltier effect. When DC current passes through its internal semiconductor junctions, heat is transferred from one ceramic face to the other.
One side becomes colder while the opposite side becomes hotter.
Reversing the polarity reverses the direction of heat transfer.
Compact 40×40mm Design
The module typically measures approximately 40×40mm, making it easy to integrate into compact thermal-management systems and DIY cooling assemblies.
Its flat ceramic surfaces can be installed against a suitable heatsink or thermal interface to improve heat transfer.
12V-Class Operation
The TEC1-12706 is commonly used with a 12V-class DC power supply and can draw up to approximately 6A depending on operating conditions.
At around 12V and 6A, the electrical input can approach 72W, so the power supply, wiring, switching components, and thermal-management system should be appropriately rated.
Efficient Heat Transfer Requires Hot-Side Cooling
A Peltier module does not simply "produce cold." It moves heat from its cold side to its hot side.
Therefore, effective heat dissipation from the hot side is essential.
A typical setup consists of:
Cold side → Peltier module → thermal paste → heatsink → fan
If the hot side cannot dissipate both the transferred heat and the electrical power consumed by the module, the cold side will become progressively warmer and cooling performance will decrease.
Reversible Operation
The direction of heat transfer depends on the polarity of the DC supply. Reversing the polarity causes the previously cold side to become hot and the previously hot side to become cold.
This makes Peltier modules useful for experimental systems requiring both heating and cooling.
Suitable Applications
The TEC1-12706 can be used for:
- DIY mini refrigerators
- Small cooling boxes
- Thermoelectric coolers
- Electronics cooling experiments
- Temperature-controlled enclosures
- Semiconductor cooling experiments
- Camera cooling experiments
- Laboratory prototypes
- Educational thermoelectric projects
- Robotics projects
- DIY thermal management
- Temperature-control systems
Installation Recommendations
For best thermal performance, use thermal paste or an appropriate thermal interface material between the Peltier module and its heatsink/cold plate. Apply even mounting pressure across the module.
The hot side requires substantially more attention than the cold side because the heatsink must remove the heat pumped from the cold side plus the electrical power consumed by the Peltier module.
Important: Never operate a TEC1-12706 at its maximum electrical rating without appropriate heat dissipation. The module can become extremely hot on one side. Use a properly rated DC power supply and ensure adequate ventilation.
