Last month, my university robotics team was frantic. We were building an autonomous rover for a competition, and the Dhaka summer heat was already pushing 40°C. We hooked up our beefy 20,000 mAh 24V LiPo battery to power the DC motors and casually our intern threw a classic 7805 linear regulator onto the prototype board to drop that 24V down to a safe 5V for our Arduino and sensors.
Ten minutes into testing, I smelled something burning.
The 7805 was literally hot enough to fry an egg. It was wasting more than half of our precious battery power as pure heat. Asking a linear regulator to drop 18V at 1 Amp is a bit like trying to break a speeding Motijheel Local Bus by dragging your feet on the pavement.
Spoiler alert: There is a better way, and it doesn't involve melting your circuit. Enter the switching regulators.
Linear vs. Switching: Stop Wasting Battery
A linear regulator (like that cursed 7805) acts like a variable resistor, burning off excess voltage as heat. A switching regulator (Buck or Boost converter) works entirely differently. It rapidly switches on and off thousands of times a second, storing energy magnetically in an inductor. This boosts efficiency from a pathetic 41% to a glorious 85–95%.
In a battery-powered robot, that translates directly to double the runtime and zero burnt fingers. If you are building projects, you will inevitably run into the "Big Three" converter modules.
Meet Your New Friends for Your Projects Power Supply
LM2596 (The Buck / Step-Down King): This module takes higher voltages and steps them down. It’s the undisputed champion of taking a 12V-24v battery and turning it into a stable 5V rail for your microcontrollers. It handles up to 3A and barely breaks a sweat.
XL6009 (The Beefy Boost / Step-Up): What if you need 12V for a motor, but only have a 5V USB power bank? This module steps voltage up. It handles around 2–3A practically, making it a lifesaver for running heavy loads off portable chargers. But I won't recommend to run bulky motors with this boost converter.
MT3608 (The Tiny Boost Lifesaver): This one is the size of a postage stamp. It is ideal for space-constrained wearable or IoT projects where you need to boost a single 3.7V LiPo cell up to 5V, pushing a modest 600mA to 1A.

A Golden Rule Before You Power Up
Always tune these modules before you connect your expensive electronics! Hook up a multimeter to the output terminals, spin that little blue potentiometer screw until you hit your target voltage (aim about 100mV higher than you actually need to account for voltage drop under load), and then connect your Arduino or other components.
With the right switching regulators, your projects will run longer, stay cooler, and stop smelling like burning plastic.
